A lot of time and thought goes into starting a family. Once you and your partner have decided that the most ideal time has come to begin trying to conceive, a lack of results can take a great emotional toll. If, after a year of unprotected intercourse, you have not become pregnant, infertility testing may be in order. Women over the age of 35 could schedule testing after six months, or even sooner if irregular menstrual cycles are also experienced.
Dealing with infertility can be a stressful process. It is important to obtain care from a physician whom you trust and feel comfortable with during this time of vulnerability. We understand your physical and emotional needs when facing unsuccessful attempts to conceive, and provide evaluation, treatment, and ongoing support to help you realize your goal of starting a family.
It is important to understand that infertility is a condition that we can work with. Having difficulty conceiving does not mean that you will never be able to have a child. To the point, infertility is not sterility. Through testing, we can discover the underlying problem or problems that may be leading to infertility, and properly deal with them so that your body can do what it should.
Our approach to infertility begins with an in-depth consultation and review of medical history. Both partners are included in visits pertaining to issues with conception, and are encouraged to discuss feelings and concerns freely. In addition to standard blood work that gives us insight into your reproductive system, ultrasound diagnostics may be used to assess any anatomical abnormalities.
We meet with both partners during infertility visits because it is beneficial to evaluate both the male and female factor of this condition. Infertility is not limited to issues with the female body only. In fact, 40% of couples seen for infertility discover that the problem stems from the male partner. This rate is equal to that of the female partner. Still, twenty percent of couples find no underlying cause of infertility.
When we do find the cause, it may be linked to:
- Reproductive system issues that may stem from diabetes, varicose veins, or sexually transmitted disease.
- Fallopian tube issues
- Issues with the uterus or cervix, like tumors, scarring, or endometriosis
- Hormonal irregularities that lead to ovulation problems.
Dealing with infertility can be frightening. However, over half of the couples who are treated for infertility eventually become pregnant. If you have not yet experienced success in your attempts to conceive, contact us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Roberts In our comfortable, compassionate practice we will listen carefully to your concerns, and do our best to answer all of your questions.
